Londoners Go Head to Head

The North and East go head to head. Tottenham Hotspur battle West Ham – currently bottom of the league. Are West Ham ready to face and overthrow one of the top teams of the Premier League? Or, will Tottenham Hotspur remind West Ham of their lowly position?

Previously the teams have met two hundred and nine times; during this, Tottenham Hotspur have taken triumph ninety four times. West Ham on the other hand, have only been able to win sixty three times against their London rivals. All numbers aside, could this be the season that West Ham change their fate against Tottenham Hotspur? We’ll soon very easily tell.

Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham: 2017/18 Season

Last season Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham drew 1-1. After disappointing half time scores of 0-0, both teams drew up the effort and scored within the last twenty minutes.

West Ham scored first, with Obiang’s mighty goal at seventy minutes. After this, victory appeared close for the West Ham side – however Tottenham Hotspur were eager not to be defeated so easily. Coming in at eighty four minutes was Heung-min’s impressive goal, saving the Spurs from a game ending nil to their name.

Tottenham Hotspur dominated the majority of the match, stacking up thirty one shots with eight on target. However, for relegation threatened West Ham, Obiang’s goal was the only shot for the team the entire match – not so inspiring.

Looking on the brighter side, West Ham manager David Moyes commented ‘the biggest thing for us was how long we didn’t allow Spurs to score.’ Yet, he expressed slight envy stating ‘I would love to have players Spurs have.’ Perhaps not the most encouraging thing to hear for the West Ham players…

West Ham vs Tottenham Hotspur: 2016/17 Season

This season West Ham managed to claim success, winning 1-0 against Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite only managing 32% possession the entire match, West Ham made wise and skilful use of the ball, utilising it to their benefit. They attained five out of thirteen shots on target, and whilst Tottenham Hotspur also managed five out of eleven shots on target, West Ham prevailed.

West Ham provided a sturdy game, the players were driven and well drilled, allowing them to win against a top team for the first time this season after fifteen prior attempts. Showing that despite all odds, they are indeed able and worthy to compete with one of the best.

Tottenham Hotspur had their attempts blocked as West Ham keeper prevented potentials from Kane and Dier.

Spirits were low on Tottenham Hotspur side, manager Pochettino commented ‘we started the second half a little bit sloppy… When you are fighting for the title you need to try not to concede this type of goal.’ On the other hand, proud West Ham manager praised his team stating ‘we had a game plan, but the way we did it was magnificent.’

Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham: 2015/16 Season

A spectacular win for Tottenham Hotspur this season, gaining 4-1 against West Ham. Top striker Kane scored two for the Spurs and Alderweireld and Walker added another two for a comfortable victory.

With Tottenham Hotspur leading the majority of the match, Lanzini came with much effort for West Ham scoring a late eighty seven minute goal. Unfortunately for the Hammers, it was too late for a full come back and they remained unable to catch up last minute. Manager Bilic noted ‘the performance matches the result. They were better than us. We played a really bad game.’

Much deserved praise was on the Tottenham Hotspur side with their manager commenting ‘it was an amazing show and I feel very proud. We all feel very proud.’  Another win paired with another milestone reached for Tottenham Hotspur, they have now gone twelve Premier league games this season unbeaten. Incredibly, Tottenham Hotspur had an abundant twelve out of twenty two shots on target – something no other team has managed this Premier league season.
