Chelsea 1-2 Cardiff – 1986/87 League Cup

In a game that sits proudly in Cardiff fans’ consciousness, Nick Platnauer gave an exceptional display for his first full appearance for the Welsh side. Even against the likes of Chelsea’s Kerry Dixon, Pat Nevin and David Speedie, it was Platnauer that came out a hero. Despite a penalty conceded, Platnauer gave Cardiff two strikes to win the League Cup match.

The League Cup hopes of Cardiff were dashed by Shrewsbury town soon after in the fourth round. It would be over twenty years before Cardiff would get another chance to face Chelsea and it would be a vital meeting on a journey to the FA Cup title. It would be a long wait for that opportunity to come and Cardiff knowingly remained hopeful.

Chelsea 4-1 Cardiff – 2009/10 FA Cup

It had been a lengthy wait before Cardiff returned to the fold to face Chelsea in the FA Cup. However, Cardiff's chance at victory were spoiled by a early goal by Dider Drogba in the second minute. After what must have felt like a hopeful first half for Cardiff as they equalised after 34 minutes, their hopes were crushed by a dominant second half on Chelsea’s part. Michael Ballack, Daniel Sturridge and Salomon Kalou all gave outstanding performance to see Chelsea into the Sixth Round.

It would take Cardiff another three years before they met Chelsea once again for a chance at redemption.

Chelsea 4-1 Cardiff – 2013/14 Premier League Season

The final score was not what the Cardiff side were expecting in the beginning of this Chelsea home game. After 10 minutes it was Jordan Mutch who put them up 1-0. Nevertheless, in a true representation of déjà vu, Chelsea fought back aggressively to take them back three years to yet another crushing defeat.

With some heavy attacking tactics, Chelsea were about to push Cardiff back with excuisite strikes from Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto’o, Oscar and Hazard once more. Cardiff didn’t stand a chance – all they could do was think of a time in 1986 where they had defeated the Premier League veterans

With the need to bag at least three points against these opponents, the game provides the perfect opportunity for Chelsea to supersede all expectations, if victorious.

Nonetheless, Cardiff are keen and will not let their opponents settle on the ball, ready to prove the worthiness of their promotion. This eagerness may be spinning in their favour as fans witnessed Cardiff winning possession in the attacking third the second-most times in the League. If triumphant, the team will have the opportunity to raise the bar for themselves as more solid competitors as opposed to the previously relegated under dogs.

Chelsea or Cardiff? Both have much to play for.
