Chelsea 1 – 0 Liverpool, May 2018, Premier League

Stamford Bridge hosted Chelsea vs Liverpool for the second to last home game of the 2017/18 campaign, taking home the win after a gripping ninety-minute struggle, which clinched Chelsea their fiftieth home win against Liverpool in the top division.

Olivier Giroud flicked the sole goal of the match in off the top of his head, narrowly securing the win in a back and forth battle which saw highs and lows for both the Londoners and the Scouse visitors.

The importance of this game was not lost on anyone in attendance. Chelsea moved up to only two points behind fourth-placed Spurs and just three away from third-placed Liverpool, with just two games left to play.

The importance game for league rankings for Chelsea vs Liverpool, and the equally strong teams meant this was an edge-of-your-seater.

Chelsea 1 – 2 Liverpool, September 2016, Premier League

A Coutinho ball into the box set up Lovren for a spanking volley into the Chelsea goal. Liverpool picked up energy from this event, but Chelsea seemed to lag behind, allowing a Henderson ball into their net too, with just enough spin to raise it dip it over the men in the box.

The first forty-five minutes ended with a nice lead for the Reds. Chelsea seemed lost for responses to anything put to them by Liverpool.

The blues woke up with a start a third of the way into the second half, with Costa delivering a tasty shot just past the near post and into the Liverpool net. But this was too little too late, as they weren’t able to capitalise on the momentum gained, and had limited chances in the twenty-something minutes left post-goal.

Liverpool 1 – 1 Chelsea, May 2016, Premier League

Eden Hazard took Chelsea into the lead early in this mostly neck-and-neck end of season toil. Both teams were desperate to get any edge they could, with Liverpool wanting an all-important three points to catch up with sixth-place West Ham, and Guus Hiddink eager to prove his worth at the club.

The opening of this Chelsea vs Liverpool game was slow, if anything, but the pace quickened by the minute, and was more than what fans expected come the thirty minute mark.

Hazard’s goal came from an impressive one-man run at the box, before deciding to unload the ball just inside the bottom right corner, with little-to-no assistance from his teammates. Highly impressive from the Belgian international, and the exact type of football we expect from a Chelsea vs Liverpool match.

It stayed pretty neck and neck for the most part from there, both Chelsea and Liverpool’s sides had moments of brilliance, but the fast pace of movement and excellent defence of both teams meant attacks were too frequent to be surprising and were quickly defended and countered.

Just as the Scouse fans were leaving the Anfield stands with their heads sunk into their shoulders, substitute Benteke shot a show stopping header into the Chelsea goal in the ninety-second minute. Absolutely fantastic work from the second capped Belgian to score.
A minute later, it was all over. Not a high scoring hammering or headline grabbing goal bonanza, but a gripping and tactical game if ever there was one.

This September’s game will be another addition to the ever competitive nature of these two teams. They’ve played so often now it almost feels like the fans probably recognise each other. It’s gonna be a close game between the two rivals and everyone is anticipating an exciting match.
