Over the course of their fixtures against one another, Chelsea have an advantage in terms of wins over the Hornets – 17 to Watford’s 10. Nevertheless, Watford have punished the Blues with a fair share of embarrassing losses. The two Premier League rivals are sure to deliver a pulsating game like so many in their illustrious history. With Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea’s helm, he will be keen to make amends for all the opportunities Watford have been given to demolish Chelsea.
Chelsea 1-4 Watford – 2017/18 Premier League Season
The 2017/18 season may still be fresh in the minds of the Watford fans for all the right reasons. It was on 5th February 2018 that Chelsea received a serious thrashing from Watford in a game that seemed to be close to ending 1-1.
The first half went by mostly goalless but far from eventless. After 30 minutes Tiémoué Bakayoko was red carded, leaving Chelsea with 10 men on the pitch. This disadvantage did not seem to faze the Blues until Watford’s Troy Deeney opened the scoring with a penalty. This was by no means an end for Chelsea, with a full second half to bring it back. Many sides have returned from trailing 1-0.
It appeared that would be the case with Eden Hazard finally returning a goal with a spectucalar strike – giving Chelsea a chance at redemption. Suddenly, the game took a swift turn with Watford swatting Chelsea’s chances completely with three late back-to-back goals. It ended with one side victorious in a huge season upset and a confused Chelsea side.
Chelsea 5-0 Watford – 2009/10 FA Cup
That is not to say Chelsea have been without opportunity to control and all-round extinguish the hopes of Watford. Going into this game as the current FA Cup champions, Chelsea quickly put Watford in a difficult position with a Daniel Sturridge volley in the 5th minute to put Chelsea into an early lead.
Embarrassment continued 10 minutes later caused by Watford's John Eustace’s own goal. 2-0 down so early on has never been a good sign for any side and Watford were no different. The match was over by the 22nd minute thanks to a damning Florent Malouda goal. Watford appeared to have no hope in sight with two further goals added in the second half – first Frank Lampard and then a second for Sturridge four minutes later.
A defeat like this was a further confidence dip for the Watford side during a disappointing 2009/10 Championship season.
Chelsea 0-1 Watford – 1999/2000 Premier League Season
After a ten-year hiatus, September 1999 brought Chelsea and Watford back for a Premier League match up and surprising win for the Hornets and Chelsea’s first defeat in 14 games. The early season game was filled with several chances, specifically from Watford’s Allan Smart. In the 26th minute a Mica Hyde corner connected against Smart’s header only to miss for a goal kick. That would not be Smart’s last chance of the match to shine.
In the second half, Smart delivered a strike that had been alluding him since the play-off final last season that sent them into the Premier League in the first place. The lead felt catchable but Chelsea were not able to return anything to the Watford side. Unfortunately, Watford’s season ended in relegation with one of the six wins that seasons being against Chelsea. At least they had one positive to enjoy.
The Chelsea vs Watford match on 4th May 2019 will give the Blues a chance to end their season on a high. Chelsea must ensure they continue their consistent performance and remain unfazed by any side no matter their position in the standings. Fans will be treated to a truly unforgettable day of first-class football when Chelsea meet Watford one more time.
