PSV – How Large a Threat?

PSV: the Dutch football team plays in the top division and boasts as one of the country’s ‘big three’ teams frequently topping their league. Indeed PSV habitually dominate Dutch football and currently stand as first in their Eredivisie league. Though they have rarely played against Tottenham Hotspur, on both occasions they routed the London team.

Tottenham Hotspur must come with a fresh mentality, free of the reminiscence of past defeats in order to overpower this threatening rival.

Tottenham Hotspur vs PSV: 2008 UEFA Cup (Match 1)

The last official time Tottenham Hotspur and PSV met to play was for the 2008 UEFA Cup battles. This match saw PSV succeed with a 1-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

Sadly, both teams came to the match having suffered defeat in their last games. Tottenham Hotspur saw and end to their run of seven matches undefeated whilst PSV suffered a weightier end to their run of thirteen matches undefeated.

With more experience to their name, PSV rebuked the lingering air of defeat and allowed Farfan to score their winning goal thirty four minutes in. With the highs of a goal, the PSV side pushed forward in determination ready to score another goal. Unluckily this was thwarted by Tottenham Hotspur who wasted the opposing side’s effort three times. Likewise, PSV’s keeper was able to save Keane’s determined effort for Tottenham Hotspur.

No matter how small the margin, PSV stayed in the lead until the final minute.

PSV vs Tottenham Hotspur: 2008 UEFA Cup (Match 2)

The second match in their UEFA Cup battle saw PSV defeat Tottenham Hotspur 6-5 on penalties. Unfortunately and unluckily, this put a stark end to the Spurs hope of winning the UEFA cup for the third time.

PSV on the other hand, not only danced their way through to victory, the team were able to soar into a comfortable place in the quarter finals. Both Tottenham Hotspur and PSV played with a 4-4-2 formation however this worked more in favour for the Dutch side.

It was a painfully slow first half in which neither goal keeper was challenged with a goal to save.

When speaking on the penalties, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ramos noted: ‘every player who takes a penalty is courageous. I can only congratulate them for their courage.’ We find however, that courage alone does not win matches.

Surprisingly, it was revealed that the Tottenham Hotspur team do not practice penalties during training. In hindsight, perhaps better practice would have better equipped the team to triumph against PSV.
